Wine of the Month for August 2017 -Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir 2012 Seven Twenty Eight Fiddlestix Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills

Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir 2012 Seven Twenty Eight Fiddlestix Vineyard Sta. Rita HillsDue to overwhelming popular demand, we are repeating Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir as the wine of the month for August, 2017.

Kathy Joseph, the dynamic, owner/winemaker of Fiddlehead Cellars, lives in Davis, CA, and makes outstanding Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills appellation within Santa Barbara County. She also makes Pinot Noir from Oregon. Kathy is a hands-on person. She is meticulous about vineyard management and a perfectionist in her winemaking endeavors. Her Pinot Noir is always top notch, and her wines age beautifully. What more can we ask?

The Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir 2012 is a delicious wine. The Seven Twenty Eight refers to the mile marker 7.28 on Santa Rosa Road within the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. It is dark in color and yet soft, smooth, and satisfying on the palate, with a deft touch of acidity on the finish. Definitely a very, food-friendly wine. I must confess, I am looking forward to a glass of the 2012 Pinot Noir with dinner tonight. This is Pinot Noir at its best.

For the entire month of August 2017 we are offering the Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir 2012 at the reduced price of $60 per 750 ml bottle or $15 per glass. Don’t miss this opportunity to taste a world class Pinot Noir.

Wine of the Month for June 2017 - Neal Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Napa Valley

Neal Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Napa ValleyEstablished in 1968 as the Jack Neal Vineyard Management company, Neal Family Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s finest gems. Following the death of his father in the early 1990s, Mark Neal has continued to focus on growing superior grapes to make quality wines. And he has definitely succeeded. Neal Family Vineyards has taken a leading role in organic farming, certifying all NFV wine program vineyards with the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Quite an accomplishment. The winery became a reality in 2001.

Sourced from four separate vineyard locations - Howell Mountain (31%), Mt. Veeder (12%), Rutherford (16%), and St. Helena (40%), the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is, in my estimation, classic Napa Valley with an old world backbone. Very dark in color, subtle ripe fruit flavors predominate. Not an overpowering wine, yet a generous and gentle mouthfeel coupled with a long and lingering finish and tame tannins make this a very delicious wine - a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon not to be missed. And a very food-friendly wine.

For the entire month of June 2017 we are offering the 2011 Neal Cabernet Sauvignon at the reduced price of $68 per 750 ml bottle or $17 per glass. I think you will like this wine.

The winery, located at 716 Liparita Avenue, Angwin, CA, is open for tasting only by appointment. Please check the winery website for further details. www.nealvineyards.com

Wine of the Month for May 2017 - Ramey Claret 2014 Napa Valley

Ramey Claret 2014 Napa ValleyAfter earning a Master of Science degree in Enology from UC Davis at age 28, David Ramey worked at wineries in France and California. In 1996 he and wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars, dedicated to creating high quality, hand-crafted wines with balance and richness from the area’s finest vineyards. And they have remained steadfast to those guiding principles.

The 2014 Napa Valley Claret, a Cabernet Sauvignon based blend, is an excellent expression of the Ramey philosophy. Sourced from various vineyards in Napa Valley appellations, and a tiny bit from Sonoma, the wine is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (24%), Malbec (7%), with a bit of Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc for the remaining 6 percent. A medium to full bodied red wine, with aromas of dark cherries and plum on the nose, a luscious texture and mouthfeel, with tame tannins, the wine is simply delicious, and most importantly, very food friendly. We recently enjoyed a bottle, with friends of course, Lasagne Verdi alla Bolognese, and Bistecca alla Fiorentina. It was perfect.

The winery, located in Healdsburg, is open for tasting only by appointment, Monday through Friday at 10 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm, or on Saturday at 10 am and 2 pm. The winery website is: www.rameywine.com. For more information, you may call the winery at (707) 433-0870.

For the entire month of May 2017, Biba Restaurant is offering the 2014 Ramey Claret at the reduced price of $50 per 750 ml bottle or $12.50 per glass. I’m sure you will like this wine.

Wine of the Month for April 2017 - Dragonette Cellars Pinot Noir 2014 Sta. Rita Hills

Brothers John and Steve Dragonette and close friend Brandon Sparks-Ellis founded Dragonette Cellars in 2005. They produce small lots of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and even Syrah. As you may already know, Biba loves Pinot Noir. Except for a pre-dinner sip of sparkling wine, usually Prosecco, Pinot Noir is her red wine preference. What I particularly like about California Pinot Noir is the wide diversity in style, color, taste, and intensity. It never ceases to amaze me. And we both have a preference for Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir. The grapes for the 2014 Dragonette Cellars Pinot Noir were obtained from several outstanding vineyards including John Sebastiano, La Rincontada, Cargasacchi, Radian, Fiddlestix, and Duvarita. Excellent pedigree. The wine is not an over the top Cabernet-like Pinot, nor is it bright, tight, wimpy Rose’-like Pinot. Rather, it is a well balanced Pinot Noir, to be enjoyed alone or with food. We recently had the Dragonette Cellars Pinot Noir on two separate occasions. First, we paired it with a non-tomato based pasta, Spaghetti alla Carbonara. Then we enjoyed a bottle, with friends of course, with a rich, tomato-based pasta, Spaghetti all’Amatriciana. It was perfect on both occasions. Next, probably tonight, we will pair it with Cotolette alla Milanese. I can hardly wait. For the entire month of April 2017 we are offering the 2014 Dragonette Cellars Pinot Noir at the reduced price of $56 per 750 ml bottle or $14 per glass. Try it. The Dragonette Cellars tasting room is located at 2445 Alamo Pintado Avenue in the picturesque small town of Los Olivos, Santa Barbara County. Well worth a visit.
